Update – 02/2008!

Tokyo Marui – AK47 – AK74 SOPMOD

Since I love my other AK SOPMOD so much, I decided to convert my already modded AK/AKM to an AK74 SOPMOD. This replaced alot of crappy ACM parts and furniture I had previously installed, but as always, the TM Internals have been working reliably. New build added the following accessories:

  • King Arms – X-47 Rail System
  • King Arms – AK74 Metal Body Set (Includes, Metal Body, Pistol Grip and Ribbed Top Cover)
  • Classic Army – SLR105 Compact – Front Assembly
  • Classic Army – Krink Flash Hider
  • ACM – VLTOR AK Stock Tube
  • MAG – AK74 Midcap Magazines
  • Systema M120 Spring

I had to have the stock tabs cut off the AK74 metal body, to accommodate the VLTOR AK Stock Tube. It fit together well. Other then that, all other parts bolted on w/o having to make any adjustments.

Tokyo Marui – AK47 – AK74 SOPMOD

I did buy an Element made AK SOPMOD Kit which included Tactical Trigger Guard/Mag Release, Upswept Bolt Handle and Selector. This will no be 2 out of 2 Element products that are complete garbage (The first was an Element AK74 metal body). The Element AK SOPMOD Kit will not fit on a King Arms AK74 Metal body w/o modifications, so remembering the frustration I had with the first Element product I had. I gave up easily on this1 and will not add it.

Tokyo Marui – AK47 – AKM Mod

The Tokyo Marui AK47 is one of TM's most successful lines as far as durability, and stock fps and accuracy. The are also relatively simple to work on and tons of upgrades exist.

This is the AKM conversion I'm working on. The following parts added so far.

  • Bomber AK74 Real Wood Stock Set
  • CAW GP-15 Grenade Launcher
  • G&P Slant Break
  • Element Ribbed Top Cover

Update 07/2007

Finally found an X47 rail system I can live with and was not ridiculously priced. The First Factory/Nitro.Vo X47 Rail System. Now just need to replace that crappy GWS AK SOPMOD Bolt, find a Krebs Offset Vertical Grip, Tactical Magazine Catch and possibly an AK104 style front end to fully complete this project 😉

Update 05/2007

UFC/G&P finally released their copy of the TDI X47 rail system. Redwolf has them for $349.00 in Hong Kong, but the Real Steel TDI X47 sells here in the US for $379.00. So this combined with the fact the GWS AK SOPMOD Bolt broke, I've lost interest in this project. Will keep you posted.

The Tokyo Marui AK47 is one of TM's most successful lines as far as durability, and stock fps and accuracy. The are also relatively simple to work on and tons of upgrades exist.

Right now it's still a work in progress. Converting a Tokyo Marui AK47 to a Blackheart Int'l SOPMOD AK. Parts added so far:

I'm now rethinking the whole BHI SOPMOD AK conversion now that the GWS AK SOPMOD Bolt and Selector was of such poor quality. Will keep you updated here.

Classic Army – SLR105 Gold Plated – Limited Edition

Manufacturer: Classic Army
Type: AEG

Came across this interesting item. This is a Classic Army built, Gold Plated SLR105. There have been a few made by retailers that were plated or gold painted aftermarket, but this would be the first batch seen, gold plated and built direct from a major airsoft mfg.

Classic Army – SLR105 Gold Plated – Limited Edition

This AEG includes a wood foregrip and stock. All external metal parts were gold plated including the butt plate, pistol grip screw, side mount, magazine floor plate and battery spacer tube under the top cover.

The plating job was very well done. All stampings are clearly visible through the plating process.

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version)

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version) All trades raped thanks to Colt

I already own 2 other TM M4 variants; the M4-R.I.S. and the M4 S-System. I was so impressed with the imporvements made on the M4 S-System over the previous generation of TM M16/M4's, that it sealed the decision for me. I could have very easily bought a CA, G&G or G&P instead, but I like having the freedom to decide which parts, if any I decide to change.

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version)

The M4 S-System and M4A1 Carbine (New Version) both have the same, "next generation", TM M4 improvements:

  • All-in-one Outer Barrel
  • Metal reinforced body tabs
  • Plus: The newer LE style stock

This looks to be a replacement to the original TM M4. Performance is what you would expect from a stock AEG and I hope it lives up to my M4 S-System in reliabilty.

Still debating on the HK416 or Stoner LMG build for this gun.

Tokyo Marui – JGSDF Type 89

{simplegrade:5}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: AEG
Date Acquired: 07/2006

I'm rather surprised on the popularity of the Type 89 outside of Japan. Already a few reviews out on this rifle. But hopefully here I can go over some facts that were missed on other reviews.

Tokyo Marui Type 89

Real Steel Info:

Type 89 rifle is a select-fire, gas-operated, rotating bolt firearm. The gas action and bolt group is somewhat similar to USA-designed AR-18 rifle, manufactured by HOWA under license from Armalite Co (USA). Type 89 rifle has receiver made from stamped steel, polymer furniture and flip-up aperture rear sights. It also has lightweight folding bipod. The type 89 was adopted by the JGSDF in 1989 thus the name Type 89.

The airsoft version has a full metal receiver, outer barrel, bipod, front and rear sights. Also includes the version 8 Mechbox which has mechanical 3 round burst. You can actually feel trigger feedback form the gearbox. 1 downside is the bipod scratches up the outer barrel when used.

Stock too short for 8.4 large battery ;(

The rifle takes a stick type battery in the foregrip , but also has a storage compartment in the rear stock that can fit a spare stick battery. The stock is too short to accommodate a large battery. It would appear that there was enough room but you'd have to hollow out the stock too much and affect the overall rigidity of the rifle. The foregrip battery compartment is only large enough for an 8.4 stick battery. The Laylax Battery Sling and Nitro V.O Battery Box + TM T89 Scope Mount are a viable and workable options for a larger battery.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – With open issue of Toyguns Field from 02/2004.

You may think that the metal body, type 8 mechbox and other features of the Type 89 are new for TM. The reality of it is, Tokyo Marui made/delivered these for the Japanese Army (JGSDF) back in 2003. The above picture shows the 02/04 issue of Toyguns Field Magazine reporting on this. Fortunately, we consumers are seeing close to the same version the JGSDF had delivered.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – M16 Mag Tests

I tested a few different M16 style magazines to make sure they worked. The magazines tested are:

  • Tokyo Marui Standard Magazine
  • Tokyo Marui Hi-cap Magazine
  • G&P Illuminated Tracer Magazine (Illumination worked fine)
  • MAG 100 round Mid-cap Magazine
  • Start 30 round Low-cap Magazine
  • DTP Electric C-Mag

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with DTP Electric C-mag

All magazines worked flawlessly. The fit is a little odd if your used to the M16/M14 style of magwells, but it's something to get used to.

J.S.D.F. Family Shot. TM Type 89, P220, J.G.S.D.F. Modern BDU's, J.G.S.D.F./Iraq Ranger 1st Airborne Brigade T-Shirt. Other JGSDF goodies here.

Just chrono'd the gun. Pleasantly surprised with the results.

Update 08/13/2006

Just a reliability update. This gun is still shooting as when it was brand new. 3 shot burst is working 100% and fps is still with a slight average increase.. Have shot a few hundred rounds through it so far and always using a mix of Armalite style mags.

Update 08/18/2006

First set of accessories came in!

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with Type 89 Scope Mount and Left Side Selector.

Both Scope Mount and Left Side Selector are all metal. Typical TM high quality and installation instructions are in both Japanese and English.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with EOTech… I'm still thinking if this is a good combo ;P

As you can see in the above pic the Left Side Selector enables right handers to thumb switch.

Update 04/2008

As really no surprise, the Type 89 never really caught on outside of Japan. But this doesn’t mean TM Type 89 3rd party add-on development has stopped. Still very hard to find TM Type 89, Version 8 Mechbox specific internal upgrades. Frontier Japan has made some nice TM Type 89 add-ons:

  • Type 89 R.I.S. Foregrip, Type 89 Side Folding M4 Stock Adapter

Update 03/2010

Wanted to get some info out quickly, so this will be a quickie. There seems to be a nice trend where retailers are doing nice reviews of products now, so as not to duplicate info, checkout AEX's CA249 Review.

Straight outta the box

Pro's:

  • Metal in all the right places.
  • Well engineered metal top cover with rail (See Pic).
  • US Style Hand Guards and Heat Shield (Real M249 Paras don't have the upper Heat Shield).
  • Plastic parts have a flat finish.
  • PGC Style gearbox!!! Shoots hard and "easily" upgradeable.
  • Classic Army Catalog Shows their AK Razz Also, seems it was used for chrono testing LOL (Nice bb strike went through the whole catalog)

Top Rail Cover

Con's:

  • Pieces fit very tightly together. This can be viewed as a Pro, but in this case it seems to be an engineering deal (i.e. you have to adjust the position of a few items to get an item like the top cover to close properly).
  • The outer and inner barrel removal to replace the battery take a little practice (See AEX's CA249 Review).
  • Looks to have very limited room in the handguard for battery. Only Mini batterys will fit. But Laylax Battery Sling works well in this situation.
  • Heavy! Not for the 98lb weakling. At 14' lbs w/o battery or ammo, it'll give you a field workout. This is about 1 pound lighter then the real steel version.

With Obligatory M249 Box mag

I may do the mod where you can fit the AEG Battery in the box mag and wire the box mag to the M249's trigger. At this point I still like the option of using M16 style low and mid caps.

Dunno what possesed me. As my buddy Bruiser @ AEX said, "Why the heck you get the Marui Uzi??? Oh yeah… you're a chairsofter…"

UZI Does It!

Just got it… It's already been reviewed elswhere

But I can say, chrono results are low compared to other stock TM AEG's, probably due to the short barrel and the "Real-Shock" simulated blow back system.

Even though this AEG has been around for a while (Released in 1998), because it uses the Version 5 gearbox, there are virtually ZERO internal upgrades for the TM UZI.

M21 Modification

Bolt-ons = M21 variant

Added the following:

  • King Arms Scope Mount
  • Guarder Cheek Rest
  • Dummy 7.62 round (Pressed by me)
  • King Arms Offset Cantilever Mount
  • USGI M14 Sling
  • Harris 2a Bipod Adapter
  • Classic Army Bipod (Harris Replica)
  • ZOS 1.5-6×42 Zip Focus, Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle Scope

M21 variant

One thing to note. The synthetic stock is flexing with the bipod attached. While TM did have a mounting hole for a bipod on the foregrip of the stock. I'm not too sure they meant for a bipod to actually go there by the flex in the stock.

With the TGS EBR (Enhanced Battle Rifle) Kit

Adding the TGS EBR Kit does have many improvements over the original TM stock. It's a well built addon kit and realtively easy to install (The included directions make the install more difficult). It does add weight to the over all rifle when installed, but the folding stock makes the rifle easier to handle. The added body rigidity, but the foregrip carried large battery does make thr EBR front heavy. Oh did I mention this AEG is now heavy?

Just a quick posting on this for now. 10am on 12/15/04 and UPS brings me this:

These are the kind of UPS deliveries I like.

I didn't even have enough time to pull all the temporary putty off yet, but i wanted to post this and assure anyone who ordered from Den that you should all get yours soon if not already Wink

Even better when you open the box. Note, I haven't had time to take off all the temp putty

UPS delivered this to me at work and sadly I'm too busy to play with it right now. But i'll have everything cleaned up and more information after I get outta here… My boss is an ass Smile

Even Marui is putting Blackwater hats in the M4-S pics .

So far I can confirm the following:

  • Tabs are metal reinforced on the body.
  • 1 piece aluminum outer barrel.
  • S.I.R. will ONLY take an 8.4 Mini Battery. The battery well is an area bored out of the outer barrel.
  • Flip up rear sight is spring loaded like the real Knight's version.
  • Flip up front sight.
  • LE style rear stock.

Evening of 12/15/04

OK had some time to review the M4 S-System tonight. This will be an ongoing thing as long as questions keep coming in.

The S.I.R. is plastic and metal.

The S.I.R. is a bit different then the all metal S.I.R.'s that have been available. Above I marked the rails which are the only things on the S.I.R. that are metal. The Rest of the S.I.R. is plastic.

The beefier 1 piece outer barrel makes up for the lack of an all metal S.I.R. We're talking zero barrel wobble!!!

The front and rear folding sights are metal!!! The rear site is spring loaded and function like the real ARMS read S.I.R. sight.

Battery Physical Size Capacity. Note the underside of barrel has a notch cut out about 4" long

To accomodate a battery in the foregrip, TM had to mill/cut a section of the outer barrel. TM made this cut EXACTLY the length of an 8.4 mini battery. The only way I can forsee using a 9.6 mini battery is cut/dremel away more of the outer barrel to accomodate the added length. Other then that the only other things are the more tradtional: ready mag, crane stock, peq external battery. We'll have to wait and see if the airsoft accessorie market comes up with a more elegant alternative.

The final few external add-ons to this system for now:

Not sure what to do about internal upgrading for now due to the battery size limitation. I don't feel like doing any of the external battery tricks yet, but I do have a Laylax Sling on order, so that may solve the battery problem.

Tokyo Marui – HK G3 SAS

{simplegrade:5}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: AEG
Date Acquired: 11/2003

Size Comparison Shot: G3/SG1, MC-51 Custom (DEN Custom Neo G3 Shorty), G3 SAS, G36c

As you can see by the above pic I have a few G3 class rifles and I really like them. I wish I had an MP5 just to take this pic, but I put my G36c in the pic since it's grip is simular to an MP5. In the real steel world I prefer the 7.62 round over a 5.56 or handgun round so that may be why I prefer G3's. But I do prefer the larger frame of the G3 class.

Summary

The G3 SAS is a combination of a G3 + MP5K. In this TM rendition, you see we have the MP5k Front End, Cocking Tube, Claw Type Barrel Attachment, Quick Detach Flash Hider, G3 End Cap with Sling Attachment and 500 round High Cap Magazine. Some updated improvements to the TM G3 series include: G3 Trademarks, an EG1000 motor (Will confirm on any gearbox updates from the older TM G3's soon) and Navy Markings on the Selector.

G3 SAS Packaging

Tokyo Marui does a wonderful job in their packaging and package design. The packaging of the G3 SAS does not disappoint and shows how their packaging has evolved.

G3 SAS Manual – HK History

As far as I can tell, there is no "REAL" counterpart to this TM G3 SAS and from a real standpoint I think it would be a hella uncontrollable gun w/o a stock. I guess it could exist, but not in TM's form. The MP5K Cocking Handle and Tube only would chamber a 9mm size bullet an not work with a 7.62 round. But TM went through alot of trouble trying to justify this as a prototype gun like the G11. This model is supposed to shoot a 7.62 HITP Flechette round. (Still doesn't solve the short pull on the cocking handle). But above pic is just one section in the TM G3SAS manual that tries to justify the G3SAS's existence. (I'm not sure why they relate the G3SAS to the OICW since the OICW uses a G36 for the rifle portion).

G3 SAS Front End

The front end is very MP5K looking. It has a 3 Claw Muzzle Adapter w/ 14mm Negative thread, Thread Protector, QD Type Flash Suppressor and MP5K Cocking Handle (Pulling the Cocking Handle will open the Shell Ejector Port to give access to the Hop Up Dial).

G3 SAS Front End – Battery Fore Grip

The Foregrip that holds the Battery will take an 8.4 600MaH and 9.6 600MaH Battery. There is a button on the front of the foregrip that lets you easily remove it to replace the battery. One downside is you have to remove the QD Flash Hider or Silencer to remove the foregrip. Also on either side of the foregrip are pre-installed screw holes to attach G36 short side rails.

G3 SAS Body

New to the G3 series by TM are HK Trademarks and Navy Trigger Group Markings!!! They Selector Switch also feels less "mushy" then past G3's and because of how short the G3SAS is it feels very solid with no barrel wobble or fore grip squeaking (G3 owners know what I'm talking about). And on the end it a G3 end cap with an MP5K type of sling swivel.

G3 SAS Cosmetic Upgrades

If you seen my other airsoft guns you can tell I hate to leave them stock, and luckily I had a bunch of extra parts I had purchased for my other G3's but never used them. So I got to make this Frankenstein of a gun a little more Frankenstein'd Wink

So far, added the following:

  • Guarder 30 MM Reddot Scope
  • TGS 30mm QD Mount Ring with Knight's Armament Markings (This gives me the use of existing iron sights as well)
  • G&G Low Profile Scope Mount
  • G36c Short Side Rails
  • TM MC-51 Slither Stock
  • TM Knight's Fore Grip Handle
  • Spec-Ops Wolf Hook Sling

G3 SAS Shoulder Stock Extended

Well even thought this is a sub machine gun, I just had to put something to shoulder this when fired. I guess it's my past training that makes it feel weird to me to aim and fire w/o a stock… If I could hold an SMG like a pistol then I would probably not put the stock on, but I either look silly holding the gun

Performance

With the addition of the EG1000 motor to the G3SAS the ROF is on par with any other recent TM gun. You and hear and see the difference between an older G3 and this one. I'm not yet sure if any other internal upgrade were made from the older G3's at this time.

I don't think I'll be upgrading anything internally on this gun because I don't want some weird battery hack. I dunno we shall see Wink
