Smokeys – AG36 Short Grenade Launcher

{simplegrade:3}
Manufacturer: Smokey's Gun Factory (Japan)
Type: Grenade Launcher

Smokeys – AG36 Short Grenade Launcher

The Smokeys – AG36 Grenade Launcher is a short version replica of HK's AG36 grenade launcher. Real steel info here.

This version is mostly plastic only the trigger, safety selector housing, rail clamp and plunger are metal. This is also odd in that it's a muzzle loaded even though my looks like it's side actuated.

But it performs well, handling all the grenades I currently own.

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version)

{simplegrade:5}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: AEG

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version) All trades raped thanks to Colt

I already own 2 other TM M4 variants; the M4-R.I.S. and the M4 S-System. I was so impressed with the imporvements made on the M4 S-System over the previous generation of TM M16/M4's, that it sealed the decision for me. I could have very easily bought a CA, G&G or G&P instead, but I like having the freedom to decide which parts, if any I decide to change.

Tokyo Marui – M4A1 Carbine (New Version)

The M4 S-System and M4A1 Carbine (New Version) both have the same, "next generation", TM M4 improvements:

  • All-in-one Outer Barrel
  • Metal reinforced body tabs
  • Plus: The newer LE style stock

This looks to be a replacement to the original TM M4. Performance is what you would expect from a stock AEG and I hope it lives up to my M4 S-System in reliabilty.

Top to Bottom: TM M4-R.I.S., TM M4 S-System, TM M4A1 Carbine (New Version)

Still debating on the HK416 or Stoner LMG build for this gun.

Tokyo Marui – Samurai Edge Standard Mod

{simplegrade:5}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: GBB

Playing a little "catch-up" on some older models I always wanted to get. I was always a fan of the Biohazard/Resident Evil series, but not a fan of the Beretta 92f. (I happened to be at Camp Pendelton the year they swtiched over from the 1911 to the 92f. It was a sad year to say the least)

Tokyo Marui – Samurai Edge Standard Mod

This is a typical high quality/reliabilty TM GBB. Takes green gas no problem, operates well and S.T.A.R.S. markings are well reproduced.  This is basically a TM 92f with S.T.A.R.S. markings.

Tokyo Marui – Samurai Edge Standard Mod

I added the G&G, M92 underrail mount for a psuedo Barry Burton model feel. The G&G mount is really well built and give an almost machined rail feel. But it makes for wearing gloves difficult with much less room in the trigger guard area.

Tanaka – JASDF Sig Sauer P220

{simplegrade:3}
Manufacturer: Tanaka (Japan)
Type: GBB
Date Acquired: 07/2006

Tanaka J.A.S.D.F. SIG SAUER P220

I bought this Tanaka J.A.S.D.F.(Japanese Air Self Defense Force) SIG SAUER P220 to compliment my TM Type 89, and get closer to completng my J.S.D.F. loadout.

J.S.D.F. Family Shot. TM Type 89, P220, J.G.S.D.F. Modern BDU's, J.G.S.D.F./Iraq Ranger 1st Airborne Brigade T-Shirt.

I've been a huge fan and enthusiastic owner of the Tanaka M700 line and was hoping the TanakaP220 GBB would not dissapoint. The model is light in weight when compared to WA, TM and KSC stock GBB's. It's GBB performance is good, but because the gun itself is so light weight, not as impressive as WA, TM or KSC's on Green Gas.

J.S.D.F. P220
right side markings.

This is a SA/DA handgun with working decocker. It uses a single stack style of magazine that carries only 12 rounds. The blowback action is crisp, but the magazine gas capacity is low. The markings are great and makes a great addition if you are going for a J.S.D.F. loadout.

J.S.D.F. P220
left side markings.

If you already own WA, TM, KSC or KWA handguns, the Tanaka P220 will dissapoint in weight and performance. In fact if I knew it was this light I probably would have bought a TM P226 and waited for someone to come up with a Minebea P9 kit (The J.S.D.F. has adopted the P226 as its official sidearm, under license by Minebea as the P9).

It's a great gun for the collector, but for upgrades and skirmishing you'll do best looking at other manufacturers.

Tokyo Marui – JGSDF Type 89

{simplegrade:5}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: AEG
Date Acquired: 07/2006

I'm rather surprised on the popularity of the Type 89 outside of Japan. Already a few reviews out on this rifle. But hopefully here I can go over some facts that were missed on other reviews.

Tokyo Marui Type 89

Real Steel Info:

Type 89 rifle is a select-fire, gas-operated, rotating bolt firearm. The gas action and bolt group is somewhat similar to USA-designed AR-18 rifle, manufactured by HOWA under license from Armalite Co (USA). Type 89 rifle has receiver made from stamped steel, polymer furniture and flip-up aperture rear sights. It also has lightweight folding bipod. The type 89 was adopted by the JGSDF in 1989 thus the name Type 89.

The airsoft version has a full metal receiver, outer barrel, bipod, front and rear sights. Also includes the version 8 Mechbox which has mechanical 3 round burst. You can actually feel trigger feedback form the gearbox. 1 downside is the bipod scratches up the outer barrel when used.

Stock too short for 8.4 large battery ;(

The rifle takes a stick type battery in the foregrip , but also has a storage compartment in the rear stock that can fit a spare stick battery. The stock is too short to accommodate a large battery. It would appear that there was enough room but you'd have to hollow out the stock too much and affect the overall rigidity of the rifle. The foregrip battery compartment is only large enough for an 8.4 stick battery. The Laylax Battery Sling and Nitro V.O Battery Box + TM T89 Scope Mount are a viable and workable options for a larger battery.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – With open issue of Toyguns Field from 02/2004.

You may think that the metal body, type 8 mechbox and other features of the Type 89 are new for TM. The reality of it is, Tokyo Marui made/delivered these for the Japanese Army (JGSDF) back in 2003. The above picture shows the 02/04 issue of Toyguns Field Magazine reporting on this. Fortunately, we consumers are seeing close to the same version the JGSDF had delivered.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – M16 Mag Tests

I tested a few different M16 style magazines to make sure they worked. The magazines tested are:

  • Tokyo Marui Standard Magazine
  • Tokyo Marui Hi-cap Magazine
  • G&P Illuminated Tracer Magazine (Illumination worked fine)
  • MAG 100 round Mid-cap Magazine
  • Start 30 round Low-cap Magazine
  • DTP Electric C-Mag

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with DTP Electric C-mag

All magazines worked flawlessly. The fit is a little odd if your used to the M16/M14 style of magwells, but it's something to get used to.

Just chrono'd the gun. Pleasantly surprised with the results.

Update 08/13/2006

Just a reliability update. This gun is still shooting as when it was brand new. 3 shot burst is working 100% and fps is still with a slight average increase.. Have shot a few hundred rounds through it so far and always using a mix of Armalite style mags.

Update 08/18/2006

First set of accessories came in!

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with Type 89 Scope Mount and Left Side Selector.

Both Scope Mount and Left Side Selector are all metal. Typical TM high quality and installation instructions are in both Japanese and English.

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with 1" Tube Reddot

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – with EOTech… I'm still thinking if this is a good combo ;P

Tokyo Marui Type 89 – Left Side Selector.

As you can see in the above pic the Left Side Selector enables right handers to thumb switch.

Update 04/2008

As really no surprise, the Type 89 never really caught on outside of Japan. But this doesn’t mean TM Type 89 3rd party add-on development has stopped. Still very hard to find TM Type 89, Version 8 Mechbox specific internal upgrades. Frontier Japan has made some nice TM Type 89 add-ons:

  • Type 89 R.I.S. Foregrip, Type 89 Side Folding M4 Stock Adapter

Update 03/2010

First Factory has recently produced some accessories for the Type 89. R.I.S.and rear stocks. I picked up the EBR style stock.

Tokyo Marui Hi-Capa 5.1 and 4.3

{simplegrade:4}
Manufacturer: Tokyo Marui (Japan)
Type: GBB

Scored 2 of the TM Hi-Capa GBB pistols today. I've always held Tokyo Marui in high regards when it comes to their GBB line of pistols. While these are not the highend replicas like Western Arms makes, these have always been good quality, affordable and above average in performance straight out of the box. The other nice part of any Tokyo Marui guns, are how many 3rd party upgrades are available shortly after the guns release. Like my other TM GBB's (Glock 26 Advance, Desert Eagle .50, MK23) these guns handle Green Gas w/o any modification.

The 5.1 is the original Tokyo Marui Hi-Capa and the 4.3 is the compact version. These are both 1911 style, single action, high capacity style guns.

Tanaka – Model 700 A.I.C.S.

Manufacturer: Tanaka (Japan)
Type: Bolt Action Gas
Date Acquired: 11/2005

Tanaka M700 AICS

The Tanaka M700 AICS is a replica of Accuracy International's A.I.C.S. (Accuracy International Chassis System) on a Remington M700 This is not a replica of any of AI's, AW line.

Tanaka M700 AICS

This is a gas, bolt action rifle and comes out of the box with very high fps. But unlike my Gen 1 M700 Police, the AICS come with the Power Control System (PCS) bolt. You can dial the system down in fps if you so desire. I'll post more later about the PS system. Performance is on par with teh other Tanaka M700. Bolt cycling is smooth and easy. Hopup is a very easy adjustment as with all Tanaka M700. The larger capacity magazine is a plus too! (That was my biggest gripe about the M700P)

Tanaka M700 AICS

The appearance of this replica is awesome! I will be taking the AICS to a local large caliber gun store called ARM USA for side by side comarisons to a real AICS. The OD stock with black furniture gives the AICS a very mil/aggro look. There are no iron sights, so optics are needed.

Since I have another Accuracy Internationl replica, the Maruzen Type 96, modeled after the AI L96, I thought a comparison would be in order since more people have probably seen the Type 96:

Maruzen Type 96 (Black) – Tanaka M700 AICS (Green)

For those of us hoping that the AICS can use some of the Type 96's bolt on accessories. Below is what I can confirm.

Interchangeable

Not Interchangeable
Laylax PSS96 Quick Cheekpiece Screw for APS Type 96
Maruzen Vanishing Silencer for TYPE 96
Maruzen Mount Base for APS-2 / Type 96
Laylax Flash Hiders/Silencer Adapters for Type 96

Mosquito Molds – PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set

{simplegrade:4}
Manufacturer: Craft Apple Works/Mosquito Molds (Japan)
Type: Gas Grenade
Date Acquired: 05/2003

Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set

Can someone really have too many nade launchers??? I think not!!!!

This is the Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set. This set includes:

  • Launcher Housing PEQ-2 Design
  • 27mm 18rds Cartridge
  • 27mm 36rds Cartridge
  • 38mm Extension Inner Barrel
  • Sticker Set
  • Manual (Although my manual was missing)

Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set Other Side

This system is built to resemble a PEQ-2 unit which I'm sure alot of you are familiar with. It's a bit larger then a Real Steel PEQ-4 unit, but for its' function, the added size is acceptable.

Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set – Opened

The PEQ-2 unit is held together by 2 screws, that look like the adjustment dials on the top of the unit. Both nades are fired independently by 2 seperate triggers/push buttons and the entire unit must be opened to recharge or replace the nades. The unit must also be opened to access a third screw use to lock this system onto a 20mm rail. Be careful of cross threading.

Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set

The nades are an 18 and 36 round, 27mm version. These are about half the size of the normal 40mm but with a much smaller gas capacity. MM did a great job on the design of these nades as opposed to the 165bb Moscarts in that they included a small hole in a retaining collar to assist on replacing those tiny metal ball bearings (All you Moscart guys know what I'm talking about).

While being very simple in design, the nades function well but with less range due to the smaller gas capacity. You still get a nice crisp "POP" and "Smoke"/Steam effect when fired though.

This new internal design will make changing things like o-rings much easier and not required a special tool.

Mosquito Molds PEQ-2 Mini Moscart Set – Size Comparison to the Stock M4 RIS "PEQ"

As mentioned above this unit is large. It's larger then an ICS AN-PEQ-2 battery pack I used to own. The 2 triggers on the rear are just simple spring loaded pushbuttons.

When fired the BB's travel in a straight grouping. The only noticeable "scatter" would be towards the end of the bb's power trajectory when wind pushes the bbs around (It was a windy day, more firing tests later). I haven't noticed a big difference yet between the nade with the barrel extender yet except less bb's fire.

Got Nades? (Friggin 14+ lbs M4…)

Is the unit worth buying? For large outdoor skirmishes the 40mm nades will work much better and you'll have more options. But I can see some fun with this unit in CQB. I think Sniperx mentioned something about adapting these to a gas shotgun, but I think the diameter will be too wide for that type of application at this time and smaller gas capacity of the nade may not make it possible with these specific nades.

Resetting the 27mm Grenades

I’ve run across a few reports over the years that these grenades are difficult to reset. Fortunately my set has always been easy to reset and have worked flawlessly since initial purchase. A few rules I use on these grenades, which may be why they keep working as good as new:

  1. These are Japanese manufactured grenades. They were built to use HFC134A* Gas and I have only filled and used HFC134A* Gas.
  2. After use and before storage, I liberally spray each grenade with silicon oil. I store these grenades with no gas.

Steps 1 use to reset these grenades:

27mm Grenade After Firing

Using a Pen Cap or
Like item, I depress the valve button on the bottom of the grenade. You don’t need to use any force, just push it in until it stops.

The valve button should have a gap after being reset.

Twist the base plate about 1/4 turn counter clockwise. You will hear/feel the valve button reset. DO NOT loosen too much. Turn the base plate clockwise to lock it in place. Just finger tight pressure.

You
grenade’s valve is now locked in place to hold gas. Proceed to fill from front fill valve. The gas reservoir is small, so it won’t take much to fill up.

* HFC134A is weaker then Green Gas and Propane. It is also harder to find in the U.S.

KWA – USP Full Size

{simplegrade:3}
Manufacturer: KWA
Type: GBB

KWA USP Full Size

The KWA USP Full Size comes standard from AEX with a metal slide. No trademarks though, so you could be holding a replica of any caliber (.45, .40S&W or 9mm) of full size USP. (Solution for trades below)

KWA USP Full Size with real steel M3 mount adapter and G&P M3 light

The KWA USP is a much more well built replica then the KJW USP. From external appearence to internal mechanics the KWA is a rock solid USP replica. It's DA/SA, with working safety and decocker. Unlike the KJW, the Double Action is smooth and even all the way through the trigger pull. All actions are smooth and field stripping is very straight forward. Standard HK USP style 3 dot site are installed.

KWA USP Full Size rail adapter and HK USP bag made by BHI

Performance is great! KWA has developed a very nice product. Maybe due to the length of time they've had the USP compact out in the market, the full size USP does not disappoint. Takes Green Gas no problem. From what i've heard (it's hard to confirm w/o the KSC variant too) that all the internals are stock the only upgrades are the Metal Slide and Metal Outer barrel.

KWA USP Compact with laser etched trademarks

A solution to the trademarks for me is done by using the laser etching equipment at my shop. I hope I can do something on the full sized USP soon. Stay Tuned.

This is a SCW version 2 and uses the WA 23 round Wilson Combat "Single Stack" magazine. There is a big difference in gas capacity between this magazine and my WA ParaOrdnance mags. I also notice a difference in the slide kick, seeming to be weaker then the Para versions.
